Oak Harbor Garry Oak Society and the Whidbey Camano Land Trust got together to plant Garry oaks at Del Fairfax preserve on Oct. 16th.
Seventeen adult volunteers and three youngsters enthusiastically helped to get ten oak seedlings and five direct-sow acorns in the ground and to install protective cages around each of them. All the cages were re-used from another oak site where the trees had out-grown the need for cages. In the spirit of fun, some of the baby oaks/acorns received names. Names were lettered on beach rocks with black sharpie pens and placed in the tree cages. Each native oak/acorn was given a designated number for follow-up and future tree maintenance.
