OHGOS is very pleased to announce we have received permission from the Navy to plant 30 young Garry oaks on Navy land along Regatta Drive. This will significantly bolster the population of Garry oaks in Oak Harbor and eventually provide habitat enhancement to connect the Garry oaks on SE 8th Ave. with the Hilltop Navy Oak Grove.
Mark your calendars for Friday, Oct. 28th at 0900 as our day to plant oak trees! Details of the day:
*We will meet at the parking lot near the Victory Terrace Housing sign. (This is directly across from the intersection of SE 6th Ave. and Regatta Dr.)
*The first tree will be symbolically planted by officials and there will be a time for officials to speak and opportunities for photos.
*The Navy will be providing Squadron help, and compost and mulch from it’s supply at the Recycling Center. OHGOS will be providing the cages, which have already be assembled. OHGOS will be providing the water for each tree. OHGOS will be responsible for having the trees, cages and water already on site on planting day.
*We will need to make sure there are enough tools to go around. All parties will need to bring their own tools. (Best if marked by owners beforehand so there’s no mix-up when packing stuff out.) Tools needed: wheel barrows, mattocks, post-hole diggers, shovels, hand trowels, rakes, sledge hammers, half-moon edgers, and pruners. Each person will need a pair of gloves, appropriate outdoor attire, and boots or sturdy shoes, bottled water, and a bag lunch.
*Be aware the nearest restrooms will be just south of where we will be working. Public restrooms are available at the Oak Harbor Library.
We look forward to partnering with the City of Oak Harbor and the Navy in this important event!
