Welcome to the website! Special thanks to Kyle Renninger for all his hard work getting this website up and running! We at the Oak Harbor Garry Oak Society are committed to the continuing the legacy of the Garry oak in Oak Harbor thru focused planting, education of our young people about conservation of the oak, and outreach to our community. We are excited to see more people attending our monthly meetings and look forward to growing the group.

Laura is a native of Whidbey Island and grew up with a reverence for the Garry Oaks in Oak Harbor. In addition to being a founding member of OHGOS, Laura is a Registered Nurse and has worked in acute care for the last 30 years. Laura and her husband, Barry, are avid gardeners.

I live on Fakkema and have long thought that the corner of 20th and Fakkema ought to be filled with trees. I am thrilled at this project.
What I am wondering is what will be happening once the trees are planted and growing. Will be become a public park? A place for families.
I sure hope that it will not be off limits and the trees only seen as “people drive by on 20th.”
I would love to know the fuller vision.
Thanks,
Great question Sharon. We here at the OHGOS are also happy with the creation of Centennial Grove and the recent planting of both Garry oak saplings and seedlings! We can’t presume to speak on behalf of the City of Oak Harbor, who owns the land. We do understand, however, that this parcel is designated as a Navy “crash zone”. This means there are specific restrictions on land use and the number of people who can be on the property at one time. As the oak trees mature and understory planting is established Centennial Grove will become a beautiful place. We hope small groups will be allowed access.
